Course 1:  Introduction to Game Design

The Ed Tech XSeries allows students to explore educational technology and game design. The first two courses provide students with a foundation in educational theory and principles of game design. In the next course, students reflect on the game development process and consider how people learn from games. They apply that knowledge and understanding by creating an educational game. The final course in the series invites students to think about the implementation and evaluation of educational technology in the classroom.

All courses are project-based, resulting in authentic experiences and peer-reviewed work that can be shared as a means of demonstrating acquired knowledge and skills.This series is a great way to learn about the fast-growing field of educational technology and more specifically, about educational games. It serves as preparation for designing, developing, or implementing a variety of educational technology tools.

Course 4:  The Data Scientist’s Toolbox

Thanks for signing up for The Data Scientist’s Toolbox. This is the first course in the Data Science Specialization, and can serve as your first step on your path to working in the field.

In this course, you will get an introduction to the main tools and ideas in the data scientist’s toolbox. The course gives an overview of the data, questions, and tools that data analysts and data scientists work with. There are two components to this course. The first is a conceptual introduction to the ideas behind turning data into actionable knowledge. The second is a practical introduction to the tools that will be used in the program like version control, markdown, git, Github, R, and Rstudio.

Designed by artist and Duke University professor Pedro Lasch, and co-taught by Creative Time chief curator Nato Thompson, the course includes creative exercises and dozens of presentations by key figures in the field of art and social politics.

I am a Berkeley educated chemistry Ph.D. who is moving into the area of working on developing appropriate technology for communities that are subjected to socio-economic oppression. The goal is to use simple and effective designs to empower people to live better lives. Currently, I am working with Native Americans on Pine Ridge, the Lakota reservation in South Dakota. I am working with a Native owned and run solar energy company. We are currently working on building a compressed earth block (CEB) house that showcases many of the technologies that the company has developed. The CEB house is made of locally derived resources, earth from the reservation. The blocks are naturally thermally insulating, keeping the house cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Eventually, a solar air heater and photovoltaic panels will be installed into the house to power the home and keep it warm, while preserving the house off the grid. A side project while in Pine Ridge is a solar computer. I hope to learn about blockchain encryption software for building microgrids. In addition, it is an immediate interest of mine to involve local youth in technology education.
